面壁九年の努力が実りますように

Design by Wata

Hangan Zazen Daruma is our highest grade Daruma.  The craftsmen do not use the usual molds, but mold them with the only existing molds manufactured over 60 years ago, and spare no effort and time to finish them.  The finished product is called Zazen Daruma.

The theme is “Menpeki Kunen” , facing walls for nine years meditation by Bodhidharma, called Daruma daishi in Japanese, who is the founder of Zen Buddhism sect.  Eventually he became enlightened, which is a metaphor for patience and hard work.

Hangan, “half-eye”,  is a state in which the mind is calm and undisturbed, with neither the eyes open nor closed. It means that it is important for half to look at the world and half to look inside one’s heart.

The face is painted by Takasaki Daruma, a top-class female painter, who expresses the delicacy and strength of the “crane of eyebrows” and “turtle of the beard”. Shimizu, the 5th generation, carefully finishs the “white snake with a mustache” and “half-eye and lettering”.

Hangan  Zazen Daruma is produced with the wish of “May your efforts be fruitful  ”
